課程概述 |
This course will introduce the role of demographic transition in economic growth. Specifically, two parts will be included. First, we will begin with the contribution of demographic dividends to economic growth. The second part of this course will focus on the economic problems caused by population aging and possible policies.
To study the aforementioned topics, the demographic statistics of global trends and country features will be investigated first. Then, theoretical and empirical studies in the literature will be explored. Dynamic programming and recursive competitive equilibrium are the tools that we will review in class. Simple computational methods for analyzing these models also will be introduced. The goal is to master the basic theory and methods so that, by the end of this course, students are capable of reading the literature and analyzing related issues.

By the end of the semester, students are capable of (1) obtaining a big picture of global demographic transition; (2) reading demographic literature; and (3) quantitatively analyzing demographic issues.

課程要求 |
Grading:
Grades for this course will be determined by the following scheme: Oral presentations 40% and a quantitative term paper 60%. The details on the grading will be discussed in the first week of this course.
Term Paper:
Each student who enrolls in this course should submit a term paper at the end of the semester. The term paper CANNOT be collaborated. The purpose of the term paper is to study interesting population policies or population problems around the world. The deadline of submitting the term paper is at 11:59 PM (midnight) of May 30, 2022 (sent by email).
The term paper should be consisting of motivations, demographic statistics in the target country or cross-country evidence, data description, an empirical regression framework, and empirical analyses. Students will get extra points if a theoretical model is constructed to analyze the empirical results in the term paper. The term paper should be written in a formal academic format.
Presentation:
The purpose of the presentation is to discuss the progress of students’ term papers. There are two presentations: 20-30 minutes per student for each. The motivation, research question, demographic statistics and the empirical model and data should be covered in the first presentation. The second presentation is for the entire term paper, focusing on the empirical results.
